What is SEO?
"Search Engine Optimization" (SEO) means improving the search result rank of your webpage relative to other webpages for a specific search term.
Ever wonder how the order of webpage results is determined when you submit a search in Google?
In addition to webpage popularity, Google actually compares titles, keywords, descriptions, and much more from every public webpage to determine what the most relevant webpages are for the submitted search term.
Improving your SEO is all about improving your webpages relevancy relative to a search term and improving its popularity-- how many people have shared a link to it.
Use Relevant Keywords
A big part of SEO is simply using words on your web pages that match what your audience is searching for to find you in Google. Include keywords in page titles, headers, and main content to improve the web page's relevance for that search term. You can add your selected keywords to each of the following areas:
Website Description
Your website description helps determine search relevance and appears under the search result for your webpage. To update your Website Description, go to the SportsEngine HQ, select Website > Website Settings, and select Information. Add your description in the Description field.
Webpage Title
When google returns search results, each result is a single webpage that could be the site homepage, but also could be any other page of the website. With this in mind, every page's title should accurately represent its content and contain relevant keywords. The page title also appears at the top of the search result, making it the main phrase that searchers read before deciding which result to click.
URL
Use Sitebuilder's built-in Friendly Name feature to create search engine-friendly URLs. For example, use https://www.example.com/keyword-here/ instead of https://www.example.com/page/345552234532. Using keywords in the URL provides a ranking boost and makes the link more likely to be clicked when shared.
To Update a Page Title or URL
Sign in to your site and turn on Edit Mode.
Go to the page that you want to update.
Click on Options.
Choose Edit Page Details.
Edit the Page Title (Long) or the Friendly Name to change the URL.
Click Save Changes.
Text Headers
If you have long content, use header tags (H tags) in Text Blocks to organize content sections. Not only is it good for readers, but Google also looks at the H tags to better understand a page and at times, uses them for search snippets (the large answer box is sometimes displayed at the top of search results).
To add a header tag, select one of the headers (Heading 1, Heading 2, etc.) before typing your header or sub-header, then select normal when writing the body of the text.
Image Alternate Text
When uploading a photo or image to your site, use keywords in the Alt Text of images, particularly of images that link to another page. Search engines use Alt Text to better understand your page content, affecting its search rank. To update the Alt Text of an Image:
Sign in to your site and turn on Edit Mode.
Go to the Image element you want to edit.
Click the Gear icon of the image page element.
Choose Edit from the dropdown.
Update the Alt Text field.
Click Save Changes.
Create Popular Content
Great content is the number one way you will be found on search engines. Without good, reliable, and original content, search engines will not be able to understand what your site and each page are about. Great content, the kind that people like and share with their friends, is rewarded with inbound links (people linking to your webpage from other websites or social media), which are the number 1 search ranking factor. Highly curated articles or news stories is not the only form of great content. Great content could be scores, rankings, results, upcoming events, or any other information unique to your organization.
However, just because the information exists does not mean Google can understand it. For example, if you have pages with team scores, add a block of descriptive text at the top of the page above the scores to help Google and users understand what the page is about.
Do not copy and paste from another site, as the search engines generally avoid showing duplicate content and will usually only show the original.
